Quotes from “Frontier Ways: Sketches of Life in the Old West”
I found the book Frontier Ways: Sketches of Life in the Old West, by Edward Everett Dale, on eBay as Brian and I were searching for living books for homeschool last year. Ever since I read the Little House on the Prarie books and the Kirsten American Girl Doll books as a child, the Old West has fascinated me–homesteaders in particular. What I like best about this particular book are the beautiful language Edward Everett Dale employs and the fact that he lived in a small town, surrounded by homesteaders, Native Americans, and cowhands, at the turn of the last century. He has first-hand experience of what life was like…

Books I’ve Read So Far in 2021
I began this post at the beginning of the year so that I could post it at the end of the year; however, I decided that I just can’t wait that long. I enjoy learning what other people are reading, and I thought you might too, especially during the summer months when things move at a slower pace. I love swinging in a hammock, reading a book, and listening to the birds chatter in the trees. The following is a complete list of books I’ve read so far this year. I added in a few interesting notes about some of the books. As you will see, my reading list has…

A Tour of Our New House, and Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas, dear friends and family! As you might guess, our big update this year is that we moved back to the area in which I grew up. I would, however, like to give you a personal update about each of us. I’ll go first! I started writing a lot this year. Much of my inspiration to write came from participating in The Habit, but I also had more time to write once everything went into lockdown mode in March. I’m so thankful for all of you reading and listening to the articles, poems, and music I post! When I started this blog, I hoped to build a small community…

Helpful Homeschool Poems for Samuel [Snow and Barber, barber]
I like to write short poems and stories for Samuel to read during our homeschool days (just like this one). We learned about the phonogram ‘ow’ this week. ‘Ow’ makes the sound ow, as in, “Get into bed now!” ‘Ow’ also says oh, as in, “My kids grow so fast.” I wrote this poem for Samuel as we studied our ows and ohs. SnowThe silent snow falls down;It covers the streets,In soft white sheets,All over the sleepy town. We also spent time this week memorizing this funny poem from The Real Mother Goose. Barber, barber, shave a pig,How many hairs will make a wig?Four and twenty, that’s enough.Give the barber…

All About the Books I Read This Year
December marks the end of a very strange year for us, and everybody else, too! We experienced many blessings this year, including extra time spent with family while living with my parents and moving into our new house in the country. (Photos coming soon!) We struggled as our schedules completely changed in March and still continue to change with Brian’s new job. Life looks very different for us now than it did in January–and not just because we moved to a new house in a new town. I can’t help thinking about the books I read this year as I reflect on the joyful and stressful times I experienced. I…
