My Continuing Weight Loss Journey
Last summer, I posted this article about my eating habits. I’d like to give you all an update about how I’m faring with my new lifestyle, diet-related choices! I ended up not losing any weight following what I outlined last year. This was tough, and incredibly frustrating. When I started exercising on a regular basis, I started eating more to compensate for the extra calories I burned. I see a Family Medicine doctor at our local clinic, and at my last appointment she explained that this is a common experience. She encouraged me to reconsider what I eat (fewer carbs, more protein) instead of how much I exercise. She stressed…

Resting in Christ When Life Feels Frustrating
Another morning has come and gone here at our house, with wispy white clouds dusting a vivid blue sky and the taste of fresh raspberries dotting our bowls of oatmeal, with my active boy fidgeting during copywork and reading words that rhyme with “cat” and trying to figure out what six minus two equals, with anxiety over how much my sweet girl ate for breakfast and how I’m going to convince her to eat more for lunch, and with a global pandemic raging quietly in the background, making most of us feel slightly unnerved about the state of civilization. Dust swirled around the basement in little puffs as I erased…

My Sister’s Response to “What Exactly Makes Men Different From Women?”
This is a guest post from my sister, Kelsey. Kelsey has her Master’s Degree in Social Work and mentors new social workers while coordinating case managers. She recently decided to go back to school to learn ASL so she can better assist her clients. In her free time, Kelsey likes to read, write, exercise outdoors, and study the Bible. *** Here’s a link to last week’s article “What Exactly Makes Men Different From Women?” I appreciate Kelsey’s thoughts! *** I think women can defend and provide, and men can care, heal and nourish, all within God ordained roles. This article is written from a perspective of a woman who got…

A Review of Wanda Sanseri’s “Spell to Write and Read”
If any of you talked with me in person last summer, I likely told you that I planned to teach Samuel how to read. Well, we’re still working on that! Samuel makes progress every week in his learning, and I make progress in my teaching. I’ve been encouraged over the last couple years by moms in our Classical Conversations (CC) community who told me that reading didn’t really “click” for their younger boys until around age eight. (Also a likely time for a young boy to go through a growth spurt, I’ve heard. I can’t imagine what a growth spurt then will be like for Samuel because he’s already so…

What Exactly Makes Men Different From Women?
“Every culture has recognized the indispensable reality of male and female, and sought to preserve and protect the distinction. Every culture has in different ways tried to equip men to defend and provide, and women to care, heal, and nourish. With nature and history already pointing us in the right direction, we can look back to Scripture, not for a comprehensive code of gender roles, but for additional clarity and insight into that which, as Paul himself says, ‘nature itself teach[es]’ (1 Cor. 11:14).”Brad Littlejohn, A Natural Theology of the Sexes “Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him,…
