A New Writing Course and A Story
A couple weeks ago I began a course offered by The Habit. Through The Habit, Jonathan Rogers (author of the Wilderking Trilogy) teaches courses, sends out newsletters, and moderates book studies–all to help writers find community and tell their stories. It’s an incredible website filled with incredible writers! The title of the course is “Writing with Hobbits.” It is a creative writing course in which we study J.R.R. Tolkien’s writing techniques in The Hobbit and then practice using them in our own writing. I plan to post all of my writing pieces for the course on this blog. In the future I probably won’t give any explanation for the pieces,…

Why Is Sharing Important? [Wisdom, Love, and My Little Ponies]
Over my few years of motherhood and many years of teaching, I’ve heard a couple competing philosophies about teaching children to share. They go like this: We do teach our children to share because good neighbors do that. My parents raised me with this philosophy about sharing. If your friend comes over and wants to play with your My Little Ponies, you share your My Little Ponies with your friend. If you’re playing with the blocks and your friend wants to come play too, you share the blocks with your friend. Hebrews 13:16 summarizes this philosophy well: “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for…

Only Our Redeemer Saves {New Music Monday}
Dear friends, I don’t normally post about my political views or my opinions of current issues in our society. I don’t really feel like writing social or political commentary is something God gave me the gift to do. Other authors of books, articles, and blogs write about current events very well–much better than I ever could–and I prefer to leave the writing to them. This won’t surprise any of you, but I do like to write music about current events. Writing lyrics and music helps me process through how I feel and often reminds me of God’s faithfulness. The following song is the closest you will ever get to hearing…

Our Ten Best Albums for A Happy Family Road Trip
Yes, a happy family road trip! I do believe that you can achieve peace and calm in the car most of the time with the right tools–the tools that work for you and your family. We learned early on that our kids do better sitting still for long periods of time if they listen to something that holds their interest well. We also learned that it is okay for us to listen to music just for us and our own road trip sanity. We look for good music: exciting and well-written instrumental parts and lyrics with a gospel-centered message. I present to you our ten best albums for a happy…

New to Homeschooling? What I Learned As a Teacher Turned Homeschool Momma
I’ve spent quite a few years teaching in various capacities. My credentials include teaching Sunday School at church, substitute teaching in public schools, and leading devotional Bible studies for women. Homeschooling, however, is a completely different arena. When you homeschool, you are both the teacher and the mom. Over these last couple years of homeschooling, I developed some thoughts and ideas about educating at home that those of you homeschooling for the first time or those of you gearing up for another year of home education might find helpful and encouraging! A few of my ideas about education are left over from when I was young, too. Although this might…
